Once you are enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you will quickly notice that the government program doesn't cover everything. It leaves out prescription drugs, routine dental and vision care, and leaves you responsible for a 20% coinsurance with no annual out-of-pocket maximum.
To protect your health and your savings, you have a critical choice to make regarding how you fill those gaps. At Linda Meeks Insurance Agent, we take a loving, caring, and understanding approach to help you evaluate medicare advantage vs medicare supplement plans. We break down the fine print so you can understand exactly how these options work altogether and select the path that fits your lifestyle.
Path 1
Medicare Supplement Insurance
(Medigap)
Medicare Supplements, often called Medigap, are private insurance policies designed to work directly alongside your Original Medicare coverage.
How it works altogether
Original Medicare remains your primary insurance. When you go to the doctor or hospital, Medicare pays its share first, and then your Supplement plan steps in to pay all or part of your remaining out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles, copayments, and that risky 20% coinsurance.
Freedom of Choice
You can see any doctor, specialist, or hospital in the United States, as long as they accept Original Medicare. You never need a referral to see a specialist.
Predictable Costs
While Supplement plans typically have a higher monthly premium, they offer incredibly low, predictable out-of-pocket costs when you receive medical care.
Important Note
Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. If you choose this path, we will also help you select a standalone Medicare Part D prescription plan so you avoid lifetime late-enrollment penalties.
Path 2
Medicare Advantage Plans
(Part C)
Medicare Advantage plans are an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. When you enroll in an Advantage plan, you are choosing to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company rather than the federal government.
How it works altogether
These plans take your Part A and Part B coverage and bundle them together into a single network-based plan (usually an HMO or PPO).
Extra Benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans include built-in prescription drug coverage (Part D), as well as extra perks that Original Medicare doesn't offer, such as routine dental cleanings, vision exams, hearing aid allowances, and fitness memberships.
Network Restrictions
Because these plans operate on HMO or PPO networks, you will generally need to see doctors within the plan's specific geographic network, and you may need prior authorizations or referrals for specialists.
Lower Premiums, Co-pays as You Go
Many Medicare Advantage plans feature low or even $0 monthly premiums. Instead, you pay copays or coinsurance as you visit the doctor, up to a legally mandated annual out-of-pocket maximum that protects your savings.
