Breaking Down Original Medicare:

Part A & Part B

Original Medicare is a federal health insurance program managed by the government. It is split into two distinct parts, each covering specific types of medical care:

Medicare Part A
(Hospital Insurance)

Part A primarily handles your inpatient care. If you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, you will likely receive Part A premium-free.

    What it covers

Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and limited home healthcare services.

    What you pay

While the monthly premium is usually $0, Part A carries a deductible per benefit period ($1,736) and specific daily co-pays for extended hospital stays.

Medicare Part B
(Medical Insurance)

Part B handles your outpatient medical services. Unlike Part A, everyone pays a monthly premium for Part B, which is automatically deducted from your Social Security check if you are already receiving benefits.

    What it covers

Medically necessary doctor visits, outpatient hospital care, durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs or oxygen), and critical preventive services (like flu shots and cancer screenings).

    What you pay

Most beneficiaries pay a standard monthly premium ($202.90) and an annual deductible ($283). After meeting your deductible, you typically pay a 20% coinsurance for most doctor services, with no annual limit on your out-of-pocket expenses.

When and How Do You Enroll?

Timing is everything when it comes to Medicare. If you miss your enrollment windows, you could face lifetime premium penalties or gaps in your healthcare coverage.

    Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

This is your first opportunity to sign up. It is a 7-month window that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends for 3 months after.

    Working Past 65

If you or your spouse are still actively working and covered by a qualifying employer group health plan, you may be able to safely delay Part B without penalties.

Because everyone's employment and health situation is different, Linda Meeks Insurance Agent provides personalized consultations to look at your calendar and ensure you transition into Medicare smoothly and legally.

Why Original Medicare is Only the First Step

While Original Medicare covers a significant portion of your medical needs, it doesn't cover everything. It completely leaves out routine dental work, vision care, hearing aids, and most prescription drugs. Most importantly, because there is no cap on that 20% Part B coinsurance, a major medical event could leave you with substantial out-of-pocket bills.

That is where private coverage options come in. Linda Meeks Insurance Agent is here to help you understand how to fill those gaps using secondary insurance structures.
